Spring, summer, winter or fall - there are always interesting and creative things to do with cotton balls. From enchanting, multi-colored magical fairy garlands to gruesome and ghoulish ghosts that can be hung from rafter, windowsill or tree - there's no end to what can be created with one of the most basic and ordinary household items - cotton balls!
Magical Forest Fairy Garland
- Cotton Balls - Colored and/or White
- Glitter
- Needle and Green Embroidery floss or thread
Using a piece of floss approximately 60 inches long, bunch and roll three to four cotton balls loosely in glitter before stringing them five to six inches apart. Adjust the flowery fey bunches to create a uniform look. Swag asymmetrically along a childs windowsill as an enticing and sparkling garland to charm the wee fairy folk.
Enchanting Easter Animals
- Egg Carton
- Cotton Balls - Yellow and/or White
- Chenille Pipe Cleaners
- Easter Grass
- Construction Paper
Carefully cut each compartment from the egg carton to form the individual basket. Poke two small holes on each side of the 'basket', and shape a chenille pipe cleaner handle to fit.. Glue a small amount of Easter grass to the bottom of each basket, and then a cotton ball to the grass.
To form the Easter animals:
- Bunny: Add an extra cotton ball to form the head, two construction paper ears and eyes.
- Chicks: Add a construction paper beak and eyes.
- Lamb: Lamb ears are shaped roughly the same as bunny ears, but a little shorter and placed at the sides, rather than the top, of the head. Add tiny black eyes.
Snow-bedecked Pinecone Ornaments
- Pine cones
- Glitter
- Cotton Balls - White
- Glue
Tear the cotton balls into thin, gossamer strips and dip into glue. Using a dull pencil or wooden stick, gently stuff the cotton in between the scales of the pine cone creating a just in-from-the-snow effect. Sprinkle with silver or opaque aurora glitter and secure a festive red plaid ribbon on top to hang from a Christmas tree.
Ghoulish Ghosts
- Tissues - White
- Cotton Balls - White
- Clear or White Thread
Place one or two cotton balls in the center of a tissue. Gather the tissue gently around the cotton ball, shaping it so that it resembles a ghostly head. Tie a 12-14 inch piece of the thread around the tissue and cotton ball, winding it a few times for security before knotting. Using a permanent black magic marker, lightly mark two small dots for the eyes. Loop the excess thread to hang the ghost from a doorknob, lamp switch, windowsill or ceiling.
